DraftKings vs Novig: Vig, Availability, and Two Different Products
Quick Answer
These two sell different things. DraftKings Sportsbook is a state-licensed book that takes the other side of your bet and prices its margin into the line. Novig is a CFTC-designated prediction market that matches you against other traders and takes no position.
Cost is the clearest split. A sportsbook holds about 4.55% on a standard -110 two-way price, win or lose. Novig charges nothing on a single-outcome trade placed before a game starts, and does charge on parlays and in-play trades.
Coverage runs the other way, and not how most people assume. DraftKings Sportsbook operates in 27 states plus DC and Puerto Rico. Novig operates in 47 states plus DC.
There's a third thing worth knowing: DraftKings runs its own prediction market too. DraftKings Predictions is a separate, federally regulated product that reaches 18 states where the sportsbook cannot go. So the honest comparison has a fork in it.
DraftKings vs Novig at a Glance
Feature | DraftKings Sportsbook | Novig |
Model | Sportsbook. You bet against the house | Prediction market. You trade against other people |
Regulated by | State gaming regulators, licence by licence | CFTC, designated 16 June 2026 |
Cost on a straight bet | Vig in the price, about 4.55% at -110 | None before a game, on a single outcome |
Charged when you lose | Yes, the margin is already in the price | No |
Where it works | 27 states plus DC and Puerto Rico | 47 states plus DC |
Minimum age | 21 in most states, 18 in a few | 21 everywhere |
Parlays | Yes | Yes, with a fee |
Can refuse your bet | Reserves that right unconditionally | Order has to be matched by another trader |
Which One Costs Less?
A sportsbook doesn't charge a visible fee. It sets both sides of a price so the two together imply more than 100%, and keeps the difference.
Two-way price | Implied each side | Total | Held on the line |
-105 / -105 | 51.2% | 102.4% | 2.38% |
-110 / -110 | 52.4% | 104.8% | 4.55% |
-115 / -115 | 53.5% | 107.0% | 6.52% |
DraftKings doesn't publish a fixed vig, and prices vary by market, but -110 a side is the standard two-way convention and DraftKings' own explainer describes -110 as a 52.3% implied chance with the difference being the house cut.
Novig's pricing works differently: no fee at all on a single-outcome trade placed before the game, for either side of it. Parlays and in-play trades do carry a fee, and those brought in $415,132 across Novig's first two weeks, so the zero isn't the whole picture. There's also an edge case worth knowing: in quiet markets Novig takes the other side itself, so you pay no fee but the price can be worse.
The structural point is simpler than the arithmetic. A sportsbook's margin applies to every bet whether it wins or loses, because it's baked into the number you accepted. A pre-game straight trade on Novig has no margin to apply.
What About DraftKings Predictions?
This is the part most comparisons skip, and it's the one that actually overlaps with Novig.
DraftKings launched Predictions on 19 December 2025 as a separate, federally regulated event-contract product, run by an entity registered with the CFTC as a futures commission merchant. It routes orders to several designated exchanges, including CME, Bitnomial, Crypto.com's exchange and DKeX, which is DraftKings' own venue built on the CFTC licence it acquired with Railbird.
Unlike the sportsbook, it charges a visible per-contract fee rather than a vig:
Contract price | DraftKings Predictions fee, per side |
$0.30 to $0.94 | $0.0200 |
$0.20 to $0.22 | $0.0149 |
$0.11 to $0.13 | $0.0090 |
$0.99 | $0.0050 |
Two details matter. The fee is charged per side, so opening and closing a position pays it twice. And it covers markets across most of the usable price range at a flat $0.0200, which on 100 contracts is $2.00 each way.
Predictions also reaches further than the sportsbook. DraftKings lists sports event contracts in 18 states where it holds no sportsbook licence, including California, Florida, Georgia and Texas. If you live in one of those, DraftKings and Novig are both available to you, and both are prediction markets rather than sportsbooks.
Where Can You Legally Use Each One?
DraftKings Sportsbook is licensed state by state. Its own availability page lists 27 states plus Washington DC and Puerto Rico. Outside those, the sportsbook simply isn't an option, whatever else the brand offers you.
Novig operates under a federal designation instead, in 47 states plus DC, leaving out Nevada, Arizona and Michigan.
That federal route is contested. Two appeals courts have split on whether states can restrict these contracts, and New Jersey asked the Supreme Court to settle it on 2 September 2026. Treat any "available nationwide" claim from anyone as marketing and check inside the app.
How Old Do You Have to Be?
Novig requires 21 everywhere.
DraftKings Sportsbook varies by state, because each state sets it in its own terms. It's 21 in New Jersey and Michigan, 18 in Wyoming and New Hampshire. There's no single national number.
DraftKings Predictions is 18, or the age of majority if that's higher where you live, because it's a financial product rather than a licensed sportsbook.
Can Either One Refuse Your Bet?
This works differently enough to be worth its own section.
DraftKings' published house rules reserve the right to refuse all or part of any proposed bet, in its sole and absolute discretion, for any reason or no reason. The same rules cap maximum net payout at $1,650,000 and apply that cap across a customer or group of customers acting together, across separate bets, different prices, different days and multiple accounts, and allow DraftKings to lower it.
Worth being precise here, because this gets overstated: none of that language mentions winning. DraftKings publishes no policy on limiting winning bettors, and reports of the practice are not independently verified. What is published is an unconditional right to decline.
On a prediction market the constraint is different in kind. Nobody declines your order, but somebody has to take the other side of it. In a thin market that means your size may not fill at the price you want.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Novig if you trade sports before games start and want no margin on a straight position, or you live in one of the 20-odd states without a DraftKings sportsbook.
Choose DraftKings Sportsbook if you want the deepest menu of markets and promotions in a licensed state, and you accept the vig as the price of that.
Compare Novig against DraftKings Predictions, not the sportsbook, if you're in a state where the sportsbook doesn't operate. That's the like-for-like matchup.
Takeaways
Cost: Novig on a pre-game straight trade, at nothing, against roughly 4.55% held on a standard -110 line. The sportsbook margin applies whether you win or lose.
Reach: Novig, 47 states plus DC against the sportsbook's 27 plus DC and Puerto Rico.
The fork: DraftKings Predictions is a separate CFTC-regulated product reaching 18 states with no DraftKings sportsbook, priced at $0.0200 per contract per side across most of the range.
Age: Novig is 21 everywhere. The sportsbook is 21 in most states and 18 in a few. Predictions is 18.
Refusals: DraftKings reserves an unconditional right to decline a bet and caps payouts across linked accounts. A prediction market instead needs someone to take the other side.
Depth: DraftKings, honestly. A major sportsbook lists more markets and more promotions than any prediction market currently does.
Responsible Gameplay
