The Most Popular NBA Bets in 2026: Spread, Moneyline, Totals and Player Props

NBA betting in 2026 at a glance

The 2026-27 NBA regular season opens on 20 October 2026 and runs 1,230 games to 11 April 2027. Most of the money on a single game goes to four places: the point spread, the moneyline, the total and player props. Quarter and half markets, futures and in-game prices fill out the rest of the board.

Most NBA bets settle without complications. A game can't end in a tie, and overtime counts toward full-game markets. Platforms differ on whether a fourth-quarter bet includes overtime, what happens to a prop when the player sits, and how long a suspended game gets to finish.

Takeaways

  • Spread first: on most NBA games the spread is the main line, priced near -110 on both sides at a sportsbook.

  • Overtime counts: full-game spreads, totals, moneylines and player props include overtime at FanDuel and DraftKings.

  • Quarters differ: FanDuel excludes overtime from quarter markets. DraftKings includes it in most fourth-quarter markets.

  • Player props: if the player never gets on the floor, the bet voids. One second of court time and it stands.

  • Rest: teams average 14.2 back-to-backs this season, and the second night is where late scratches land.

  • Popularity: tickets count bets and handle counts dollars, and the two often point at different sides.

The markets on an NBA board

Seven markets carry most of the action on an NBA card, listed in the order this guide covers them.

  • Point spread: the favorite gives points, the underdog gets them.

  • Moneyline: pick the winner, no points involved.

  • Total: both teams' points combined, over or under.

  • Player props: points, rebounds, assists, threes and combinations.

  • First half and quarters: the same three game markets, cut into periods.

  • Futures: the title, conference winners, win totals, awards and the NBA Cup.

  • Live: in-game prices that move with every possession.

Game markets

1. Point spread

NBA spreads run from a point or two between even teams to double digits when a contender hosts a rebuilding side. The number moves, so you can shop both the line and the price. Some final margins come up more often than others, so half a point is worth more at some numbers than at others.

2. Moneyline

The straight winner. Because overtime settles every tie, there is no draw to price. Heavy favorites are common in the NBA, which makes the moneyline a poor place to bet a favorite and a useful place to bet an underdog you'd otherwise take with points.

3. Total

Both teams' points added together. Pace moves it a lot. Two fast teams on a full night's rest produce more possessions than two slow teams on the second night of a back-to-back. Because overtime counts, a tied game at the end of regulation is worth an extra five minutes of scoring to the over.

What the price is costing you

An NBA spread at -110 on both sides asks you to win 52.4% of the time to break even. Add the two implied chances and the excess over 100% is the book's cut.

A standard NBA spread at -110 both ways keeps about 4.55% of what's staked, and that cost comes back on every game you bet. On Novig the price is set between players, and a pre-game straight trade carries no fee for either side. In-game, a taker pays 0.03 x price x (1 - price) per contract, which is 75 cents on 100 contracts at 50 cents. Makers pay nothing on any trade type.

Player markets

4. Player props

Points, rebounds, assists, made threes, and combined lines such as points plus rebounds plus assists. The menu is wide and the lines are set off minutes as much as talent. A player's line assumes a normal rotation, so a blowout that sends starters to the bench in the fourth quarter is a common way for a reasonable over to lose.

The player-must-play rule

Both books checked here void a prop when the player doesn't take the floor, and neither cares how long he plays once he does.

  • FanDuel: player performance bets stand once the player takes the court, whatever the minutes. A player who takes no part voids.

  • DraftKings: participation means entering the game according to the official box score. A player who doesn't participate voids.

A player who checks in for two minutes, tweaks something and leaves still counts as playing. Your over on 24.5 points stands, and it loses.

Period markets

5. First half and quarters

Spreads, totals and moneylines on the first half or a single quarter. First-half markets let you bet the starters without the bench minutes and garbage time that shape a fourth quarter. A tied quarter or half can push or carry a three-way price, so read the market before assuming a two-way line.

FanDuel's quarter markets exclude overtime, and its second-half markets include it. DraftKings includes overtime in second-half markets and in most fourth-quarter markets. A fourth-quarter over can win at one book and lose at another on the same game.

Longer markets

6. Futures

The championship, conference winners, regular-season win totals, awards and the NBA Cup. Win totals reward projection work, though injuries and trades reprice them all season. FanDuel requires a team to complete 80 games for win totals to stand, and the NBA Cup final doesn't count toward a team's regular-season record.

7. Live

In-game prices update between possessions and through timeouts. The margin can be wider than on the pre-game board, and a run moves the price quickly.

Back-to-backs and rest

Teams average 14.2 back-to-backs in 2026-27, the lowest figure since the league added the NBA Cup, and no team plays more than 16. The schedule has no stretch of four games in five nights.

The second night of a back-to-back is where late scratches cluster, and it's also where the league gives teams more time to report. Since December 2025, teams refile injury reports on game day, except for the second game of a back-to-back. A prop bet placed the night before can be sitting on a player who is ruled out the next afternoon.

The rules that decide NBA bets

Overtime: full-game markets include it at FanDuel and DraftKings, and since a game can't end tied, the moneyline never pushes.

Suspended games: FanDuel voids an NBA game that isn't completed within 24 hours of its scheduled start. DraftKings gives a game two calendar days (four in the playoffs) and if it isn't finished in time with fewer than five minutes of regulation left, settles on the stats at the point play stopped.

Venue changes: FanDuel voids bets placed before an NBA venue change is announced.

Tickets against handle

Platforms report popularity two ways. Tickets are the share of bets on a side, so a $10 bet and a $10,000 bet count the same. Handle is the share of money. When most tickets sit on one side and most of the handle sits on the other, a few large bets disagree with the crowd. Check both numbers before reading anything into a lopsided ticket count.

What to look for

  • Price, then line: add both implied chances together. A -105 spread costs about half what a -110 spread does.

  • Cost per bet: on a sportsbook the margin sits in the price. On Novig, a pre-game straight carries no fee, and live, futures and parlay takers pay a fee on their own line.

  • Overtime clauses: check whether a quarter or half bet includes overtime before you bet it.

  • The injury report: on the second night of a back-to-back, wait for the game-day status before betting a prop.

  • Minutes, then the stat: a prop is a bet on playing time first.

Novig requires users to be 21 or older.
